DARWIN PRIMATE GROUP WISH LIST

To Make Our Dreams Come True, Visit our Donate Page to Help with Our Wish List: http://www.primates.org.za/donate.html

NEEDED RESOURCES:

2 x Release enclosure needed for our troop once the troop is released back into the wild.

G.P.S. Radio telemetry systems for a couple of monkeys in release troop.

Micro-chipping for all released monkeys.

2 smaller introduction cages.

10 x transport cages to relocate monkey troops.

2X trap cages for relocation of "damage causing" animals.

Pressure hose for cleaning

Projector for Power Point presentations

Second hand gas fridge for monkey food.

Solar Panels.  (Since 2009, we have relied on two solar panels to fuel our laptop. The electricity pylon on the property had to be cut off after it proved to be dangeorus to the monkeys and no amount of negotiation with Eskom could help us find a solution).

VEHICLE:

THE DARWIN PRIMATE GROUP is at present in need of a reliable vehicle to continue its work. The vehicle is needed for fetching orphaned primates, taking them to a vet, locating wild troops to monitor populations, fetching primate food from Plettenberg Bay and various other activities. We have an introduction cage which presently fits on to the back of a van which we use to introduce orphan baby baboons to wild troops.  At present our centre relies on an old 1987 mercedes which is sapping us of much needed funds and is unreliable in that it regularly breaks down at crucial times. A vehicle is the backbone of a project like this and is our most important need right now.

FRUIT AND VEG

SUNFLOWER SEEDS, PEANUTS, MIELIES.

BEEFEE POWDER FOR VITAMINS R65

EGGS

LACTOGEN FOR BABIES

PRIVATE LANDOWNERS:

We are building a data base for potential release sites for rehabilitated monkeys and baboons.Release sites which provide definite safe and appropriate environments for rehabilitated monkey troops are needed.Natural habitat, natural water source, low predator populations and a scarcity of human presence - particularly humans that are hostile towards monkeys - are some of the aspects we require. Please contact us if you think you can help.

LAND NEEDED TO SUSTAIN OUR REHABILITATION PROGRAM:

The Darwin Primate Group would like to own land where it can take in orphaned and injured vervet monkeys, form adequate troop structures and be able to release on site in order to monitor released troops long term and provide sanctuary for vervet monkeys  - and when necessary, injured and orphaned baboons -
that cannot be rehabilitated but are able to lead qualitative lives. Troops will also be formed to be released on appropriate sites elsewhere. At present wih our centre being the only official rescue centre in this province, people with baby orphaned baboons have been appealing to us for help. Unable to turn these orphans away, knowing they will be killed we have a few in our care who are being rehabilitated back into the wild. Unfortunately the centre is sitauted in an agriculturally zoned area making all our primates extremely vulnerable to the laws that allow monkeys and baboons to be persecuted. Both these species are allowed to be hunted - two a day all year round. The wild troop of baboons that we have been working with need protection as much as all the monkeys and orphaned baboons in our care making it crucial for us to find land whereby we can offer adequate protection to these primates and fulfill all our goals on a sustainable basis.
